This is EXQUISITE. The colors, the shimmering pixels. The flawless animation. This had as much formative impact on me as an artist as Degas, Morandi, or any other very important person. If I could only know which pixel artisans from the Yoshi’s Island staff were in charge of this, I would shake their hands.
Remember, kids: when you’re animating flapping wings, never have a middle frame. That’s how they’ll know you’re a fraud.

Wow! Peep this! A chiptune cover of Grizzly Bear’s “Two Weeks” paired with matching pixel gifs of the music video. Very nice!

jeffliujeffliu:

So I made this cover of the song Two Weeks by Grizzly Bear about a year ago. I had this idea to upload it with a bunch of cool art but I never got around to doing it until now! I hope you like it!

If this is in your dashboard then click the little thumbnail guys for animation!

Never seen this illustration before. Neat!
poisonmushroom-org:

I’m not sure what this is from, exactly, but it’s a cool and rather rare piece of Super Mario World art just the same.
Also: Note the “Super Mario Bros. 4” title above the World logo.

Ultraviolet Vision for You and Me

People who remove the lens of their eye (mostly as a treatment for cataracts) are called aphakic.

… Aphakic patients report … an unusual side effect: they can see ultraviolet light. It is not normally visible because the lens blocks it. Some artificial lenses are also transparent to UV with the same effect. The receptors in the eye for blue light can actually see ultraviolet better than blue. Military intelligence is said to have used this talent in the second world war, recruiting aphakic observers to watch the coastline for German U-boats signalling to agents on the shore with UV lamps.

An illustration of how ultraviolet appears is provided by the Impressionist painter Claude Monet. Following cataract surgery in 1923, his colour palette changed significantly; after the operation he painted water lilies with more blue than before. This may be because after lens removal he could see ultraviolet light, which would have given a blue cast to the world.

—From Let the light shine in, an article in The Guardian

This blows my mind. Wether I need it or not, I will have this procedure done in my lifetime. I’m not kidding. When I’m an old man, I will voluntarily remove the lens of one of my eyes so that I can see ultraviolet. I will not wait for cataracts to justify it. I’m just going to do it. It’s going to be awesome.

Just so we’re extra clear here, this is not some Generation Y ironic overstatement for comedic effect. I am going to do this.

Thanks to Kottke for bringing this to my attention.

Sales of obscure game consoles vs. non-iPad tablets
Wow, I knew those things weren’t selling, but … less than the 3DO?! For all you non-nerds out there: The 3DO is a massive failure in the history of gaming. It’s a platform for which the only notable and memorable games are the ones so bad that they make for a good joke.
Why is this happening, though? Simply put, because these non-iPad tablets are markedly inferior and cost almost the same. The cost-to-benefit ratio is just way off. I, for one, can’t imagine paying almost the same price of the iPad for a tablet that didn’t have the same amazing responsiveness, battery life, and ease-of-use, and above all, amazing software like GarageBand. Have you ever played with GarageBand on the iPad? You can hate on Apple all day and I won’t care, but sit down with GarageBand for a minute. Shit is magical.

So, why would Facebook open-source their datacenter designs? For the same reason Google open-sources the Android kernel. Social responsibility and encouraging innovation have very little to do with it. Follow the money, ya’ll.
